Superfoods for healthy hair are actually a legit thing. It’s not just our body but also our hair that needs good nutrition to stay healthy. I have done my research, and while there are many good superfoods for healthy hair, I have focused in this article on 5 main ones that make a huge impact.
Sure, you can apply all the good deep conditioning masks, serums, and shampoos, but that will only help to some extent if the problem lies within. There are many reasons for dry, brittle, fragile hair and hair fall. From heat styling to applying products too frequently, you name it, but food intake matters as well. And I think that goes for anything: it’s the food we eat that makes us. Our skin glows, and our hair stays healthy.
Superfoods for healthy hair
- Egg yolk
- Salmon
- Bamboo shot
- Nuts
- Oyster
Egg yolk
Biotin produces keratin (which is the hair protein) and egg has biotin and protein both. Other than that, it has vitamins A, D, and E, in which I would especially focus on vitamin D that produces new hair follicles. So think of egg yolk as the multivitamin for your hair.
Don’t take the yolk off your eggs—it’s actually very rich in nutrients and helps support hair health in the long term. Also, the daily protein recommendation for eating eggs is around 4-5 eggs. I highly suggest that if you are like me, conscious about your inner and outer health, do take at least 3 eggs per day, including the egg yolk.
Sure, I get acne from eating eggs, but I have learned to feel good and give my body the nutrients it needs. For acne, I will slather on a good pimple patch or spot treatment, but self-care comes first.
Salmon
Eating salmon is very good for hair because it has omega-3 fatty acids. You can either take omega-3 oil supplements or eat fish in its organic form. I cannot emphasize enough its health benefits. Fatty fish is highly recommended to promote better hair health, like salmon and mackerel. I mean, a good salmon recipe is all you need and not only will your taste buds thank you, but your hair as well.
Bamboo shoots
Bamboo extract has been becoming known for its health benefits, especially for hair, since it contains biotin. Also, it has been known to strengthen the hair follicles. So if you have been experiencing hair fall lately, it’s time to add some bamboo to your food intake.
Apparently, it contains silica, and silica doesn’t promote hair growth but rather has more of a hair follicle-strengthening effect. Bamboo is rich in silica. If you are not a fan of eating bamboo shoots alone, you can add them to your daily salad. Start slow and once you develop a taste for it, you can increase the amount.

Nuts
I would not single out any nuts and say this one is the best for hair growth, because they all contain nutrients that are essential for hair growth and health. But if you are looking for something that is rich in biotin, it’s almonds. I actually have a routine where I take 7 almonds on an empty stomach in the morning. This has been doing the trick not only for my brain but also for my hair.
Brazil nuts are a good source of selenium, which also helps boost hair growth. My favorite way to go about nuts is to mix them all together and have them throughout the day or add them to my salad.
Oyster
Zinc is my favorite. It’s not only good for hair growth but also has lots of other benefits for our skin and body. When the body doesn’t have enough zinc, it leads to hair fall—so much so that even our eyelashes fall out. Oysters are super rich in zinc.
Hair loss is mainly due to a lack of protein, so it makes sense to eat a protein-rich diet. Our hair follicles are also made of protein. Additionally, biotin is important for the production of keratin, a type of protein. Therefore, you need both protein and biotin in your diet to support healthy hair.
Fruits that contain vitamin C are very good for strengthening the hair, like oranges, lemons, and berries. When you apply vitamin C serum on your skin, because it’s known to stimulate collagen production, this is what it does for hair as well. It promotes collagen production, which makes our hair strong.
